European Ranger Federation

Formed in 2017, the European Ranger Federation (ERF) is a European networking organisation for professional rangers and others involved in the day-to-day management of protected areas; the conservation of wildlife and habitats; visitor safety; education and interpretation; law enforcement and anti-poaching activities.

The ERF was formally constituted as a not-for-profit NGO (under German law) and operates under the umbrella of the International Ranger Federation.

The European Ranger Federation Executive Committee (EEC) extends its warm wishes to CMA members and invites you to visit the ERF website to ‘meet’ the EEC and to add any stories relating to your own experiences.

European Ranger Congress

In one of the years when there is no World Ranger Congress, there is usually a European Ranger Congress instead, which helps to keep the close links between rangers within Europe. One of the European Ranger Associations coordinates the event. So far, Romania, Hungary, Croatia and most recently the Czech Republic, have all hosted the events.

The next European Ranger Congress was due to be held in Germany, in the Bavarian Forest, in May 2020 but unfortunately had to been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It will not take place as originally hoped in autumn 2021 as it would clash with the World Ranger Congress (WRC) which is now being planned for May 2022 in Portugal.

However, in order not to lose all the hard work that was put in to the planning of the ERC, some elements will be used to offer specific European Ranger Training next year, so please keep an eye out for notification of these at a future date.

2017 European Ranger Congress

The 4th European Ranger Congress was held in May 2017 in the Czech Republic. One of the highlights of the Congress was the forming of a European Ranger Federation (ERF), primarily to give a common voice to European Rangers whilst still under the umbrella of the International Ranger Federation (IRF).

The CMA was well represented and our Vice President, Roger Cole, was elected to the role of Vice President of the new ERF. Click here to read some inspiring reports and articles written by those who were lucky enough to attend. This included the CMA East of England Regional Co-ordinator Tom Heenan, who gave an inspiring interview on the Park Leaders Podcast, focussing particularly on the recent European Ranger Congress.
