Balancing the needs of rare and endangered insects in SSSIs and the care of Scheduled Monuments on the busy coastline of the South Devon National Landscape.

Find out more about the coastal area of South Devon’s protected landscape, a nationally important, outstandingly beautiful, wild and rugged coastline. As well as being rich in rare and endangered species, with thousands of years of history etched into the landscape, it forms one of the busiest stretches of England’s longest National Trail – the South West Coast Path.

Balancing the needs of these visitors, residents, farming and heritage is vital to ensure successful outcomes for people, climate and nature. During this session you can find out more about some of the projects we are working on along this coast and the partners we work with to help deliver them. These include:

Life on the Edge is a 5 year project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund looking to reverse the declines of some of the most threatened and rare insects and plants in the country. During the visit we will discuss species conservation at a landscape scale, how the project is looking to enhance habitats, and importantly involve individuals and communities throughout the process.

The South Devon Coastal Heritage Project is in its 3rd year of delivery, working with land managers and Historic England to manage and enhance scheduled monuments which are on the ‘At Risk’ register. Through the project we aim to provide ways for the local community to engage with the heritage, better interpret it to increase their understanding and actively improve management to remove them from the register.

The day will consist of a short morning indoor session in East Prawle village hall, with presentation and discussion. Followed by a site visit (c.2.5mile walk with some steep terrain over uneven ground) to see the habitats and hopefully some of the special species.

This event is kindly organised by South Devon National Landscape, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Tea and coffee provided, but please bring your own packed lunch.
