Stage Zero river restoration – A tour of the approach and practical application Beaver Site tour – A tour around a 3 acre Beaver Enclosure.
Ground breaking work on the river Aller. Reconnecting our rivers and streams to the surrounding landscape, helps guard against severe weather and attracts a greater variety of plants and animals. In the first project of its kind in the UK, Holnicote are trailing ground-breaking work to protect the river from climate change and flooding and protect wildlife.
Holnicote have partnered with the EA, and the European programme Interreg 2 Seas Co-Adapt to restore a tributary of the River Aller, which passes through the estate.
We will get a tour round Selworthy Farm and see the Stage Zero River restoration approach. Seeing two examples, 1 on a ditch network and 1 on a main river site (biggest in the UK).
We will then move on to a Beaver Enclosure tour in the afternoon to discuss benefits, management advice and the future of Beavers.
In January 2020 an adult pair of Eurasian beavers were released at the National Trust Holnicote estate in Somerset, to improve flood management and support wildlife on the rivers they care for. The beavers are helping to make areas of the river more resilient to climate change and the extremes of weather it will bring. The dams they create will hold water in the dry periods, to help lessen flash flooding downstream, reduce erosion and improve water quality.
The beavers at Holnicote have had their first baby, the first `beaver to be born on Exmoor for 400 years, and new footage of the kit in the wild was released to mark its first birthday. We will visit the beaver enclosure and have a tour around the 3 acre site.
