Cotswold Commons and Beechwoods NNR and The CMA in Gloucestershire 23rd November

Cotswold Commons and Beechwoods NNR is a beautiful reserve close to Stroud boasting some of Britain’s finest beechwoods and limestone grasslands. It is made up of several sites managed by Natural England and jointly managed with the National Trust.
Together with the Natural England reserve managers, we will have a closer look at the management of two of the sites – Buckholt Wood and Cranham Common. Buckholt Wood is notable for its rich understorey – unusual for beechwoods – and is one of the best sites in Gloucestershire for fungi. The wood is managed for both commercial timber production and for nature conservation under a Nature Reserve Agreement. Cranham Common is an excellent example of the restoration of a limestone grassland common in cooperation with the local community. The site is grazed under a paddock system which addresses some of the challenges posed by roads, access etc. This has evolved over the years and there are further exciting developments to come in the future.
After the study part we will have the chance to explore how the CMA in Gloucestershire could be strengthened in order to create networking and training opportunities.
