At Stockgrove Country Park, Bedfordshire
Stockgrove Country Park
Jointly owned by Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire County Councils Stockgrove is managed by a local Trust, The Greensand Trust. It is about 80 acres, and about half of this is SSSI and with around 350,000 visits a year the challenge of balancing visitor pressure and wildlife conservation is immense.
Dogs, Horses and Bikes
Stockgrove is a popular dog-walking site for the residents of Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes and nearby villages but the highest number of complaints are dog related. How can we resolve some of the issues?
Horses and bikes are not allowed in the Country Park itself but Access Agreements on two neighbouring sites allow limited use. But both horse riders and cyclists want more and insist on riding wherever they want, including in sensitive parts of the SSSI. How can we persuade them to keep to the rules? Should we change the rules and allow more recreational use in the area? What are the costs of managing permissive access?
